My scattered brain

I have to tell ya – my brain is all over the place.  If I could harness all my thoughts and follow them through – what a wondrous accomplishment that would be. But, alas, it is but a jumbled mess and I am trying to decide how best to untangle the web.

I am a producer of clutter.  According to the Law of Attraction, this is a result of the clutter in my brain. So, I do the mental exercises, the positive affirmations, the clear the head before bed…guess what…it’s even more cluttered now!  Now that I concentrate on my goals that I have learned to set, and focus on the good things in life - expansion to the possibilities has opened up.  More stuff in my brain!

The blog should help – get things down, in a category, out of my head.  But it is awfully public.  I love you guys, but I can’t tell you everything.  Maybe it’s time for a journal.  Or maybe I should use the Mind Jet program more – but I am not real sure I am using it to the best of its abilities. Has anybody else used it with any success?

Dwayne Melancon has a great post concerning one of my biggest problems – managing email.  Actually, managing isn’t the problem – it’s not like I get that much. The problem arises from when the little announcer sound goes off to tell me I have new mail and I will stop whatever I am doing to check it. I know – compulsive.  I know – I should not leave it running.  Guess what – it’s still running.

So, then I check the email, check my google reader, and then it’s three hours later.  How does that happen?  j david macor give some great tips for getting this part of my life organized with one flaw – there are too many options.  Just tell me which ones to use!

I think maybe I should resort to a doctor’s office type schedule – you know, the one that is color blocked with certain activities at certain times of the day. Ha!  The title of the blog is Beautiful Chaos.  I am not so sure a highlighter could tame it.

So, there’s my dilemma, and your mission, should you choose to accept it.  Any ideas or things that have worked (or not) for you?

They get so big so fast

So, I guess this is the first post of many that I will write over the next 18 years.  55 posts if my math is right.  It is a baby’s birthday.

Ask me what my favorite holiday is and I will tell you, “Birthday!” Yours, mine, theirs, whoever’s – I love birthdays. And my kids are my most favorite.

My Savannah is turning six but we had her party Saturday. A pool party to be exact. And my Savannah, never to miss a connection, decides on a “Lilo and Stitch” cake and Luau decorations. Instead of party hats, we had leis, with my Savannah picking out her own very special one. And, of course, Webkinz were the present of the day – the pink poodle winning the grand prize. (Please notice the missing tooth – it is her first and she is so very proud.)

It is not often my heart is light and heavy at the same time. But it does always seem to happen during a birthday party.

Inward comfort – outward things

Ok, so yesterday, I made quite the declaration of hardness when it comes to the metaphysical.  I do believe in God, an afterlife, and occasional oddities…but general mystic stuff just ain’t my thing.  I am not real sure if I think that it works, if it is just a placebo effect of things that could have been accomplished if you had just done the work, or something I just put off.

But, I know I believe in intellectual honesty.  I also know I believe in the growth and evolution of self. So, in honor of those things, I feel it necessary to acknowledge the fact that there is one area where I am already completely comfortable with, if not addicted to, the facade of the placebo.

I totally dig on comfort items.

  • Right now, I am drinking Chocolate Velvet coffee – not because it tastes good, but because it feels good.
  • When I was in the Navy going through the 2nd hardest school they had to offer, I, the squared away, had the matching Winnie the Pooh notebook and pen.
  • Before I deployed, I bought a pretty purple pen because it made me smile.
  • I own 4 Webkinz myself because they make me giggle.
  • I have a favorite coffee mug (which the Chocolate Velvet Coffee is in right now).
  • I will start having my husband light up the fireplace too early in the fall.
  • I have a favorite blanket.
  • I have footy pajamas.

They say confession is good for the soul – so, couple this with today’s affirmations and I should be unstoppable!

The Secret of Positive Thinking

I mentioned some short time ago that the subject of my goals has become a quest for a path.  There have been quite a few people put in my path to help out with all of that.

Things go along as things are wont to do.  I am reading “The Secret.” More on that later.  I will tell you it is a very easy read…very repetitious – but there’s a reason for that.

“The Secret” is, so far as I am in the book, putting your mind where you want your feet to go.  I am a smart girl, so I understand the concept.  My mind is also very busy – so I have a little trouble with the focus thing.

In walks Kirsten Harrell.  Well, sorta.  She is a friend of Chris Cree and I lurk her blog trying to figure out how I feel about the idea.

People that know me well, understand that I am a bit of a paradox. I am incredibly feminine, with very little fluff.  I love pink and pearls, and have very little time to sit around and talk about what you’re gonna do – set a plan and get to moving!  I wasn’t really one for all the SNL Stuart Smalley business.

But, I am also one to admit when someone else may have a better way. So, I had to consider – what if Kirsten was on to something with these “Positive Affirmations” she promotes? What if the cat really was out of the bag with “The Secret” and keeping your mind in line in a particular way was the key.

So, on over to ipopin I went.  She has an album of 11 affirmations that seemed to fall in line closely with my values.  It was $10 for the download…I figured, I had spent way more than $10 on things far less likely to be useful.

I won’t say that they are life transforming – yet.  I will say that I am not disappointed in the least that I bought it.  I will also say that I listen to all 11 affirmations more than once a day…and it feels good.  I am not ready to give this up to fact vice coincidence…but I am also going to listen to them all again today.

I’d like your thoughts and I’ll keep you posted on mine.

Do you have any NEW information fo me?

My 5 year old, is brilliant.  Really – these are not just the words of a proud mommy.  Her brain works faster than most, with more clarity, and catches more information.  While it excites me to no end to think of the awesome woman she will become – dealing with an strong willed, logical, 5 year old master negotiator can be some what trying.

Typical conversation goes like this
Her – Mommy, can I have (whatever)
Me – Not now
Her – Why?
Me – Because (whatever reason)
Her – But (“objection” to the reason)
Me – No sweetheart
Her -But what if (“solution” to the reason)
Me – No
Her – But (repeat objection/solution)
Me – No
Her – But (reword and repeat objection/solution)

Does this sound familiar to anybody else out there? I laugh because I hear adults speak to each other this way sometimes.  I have even had end this back and forth with a salesman the same way I end it with my daughter.

Me – Do you have any new information to add to this conversation?
Her – No ma’am (she pouts, turns around, and finds something else to do)

The Confessions of a (Relatively) Perfect Mom

I love being a mommy – it is truly one of my favorite things. My four daughters are a joy in my life and I wouldn’t trade them for a thing in the world. Ask them and they will tell you – I am the best mom in the world. In fact, I do consider myself the perfect mom.

***Begin playing sappy music***

McDonald’s is not a staple of our diet. We have family movie night. I am cautious of the movies they watch, clothes they wear, music they hear, and the friends they have.  We discuss values and citizenship. We see the dentist twice a year and the doctor for regular check ups. We discuss stranger safety. Chores are a must. School work is priority – even in the summer.

***Record playing sappy music scratches to a halt***

Let’s get real…I am a great mom, relatively.  While all the above statements are true, let me let you in on some more truths.

We rush in the morning to get to school on time. They probably watch too much TV.  The kitchen isn’t always clean. I don’t read to them for 30 minutes every night. Sometimes I just want to be left alone. They brush their teeth at least once a day, but definitely not after every meal. There is always laundry to be done. We don’t always eat together. I am ready for summer break to be over. Sometimes dinner comes out of a box. Their room is a mess and I am tired of fighting about it. I have made the mad dash to Wal-Mart to get supplies for a school project that is due the next day.

Why tell you all this? Because I believe I am not alone. I believe that there are a ton of mommies – probably most – out there who feel overwhelmed and under performed most of the time.  I believe that these moms (dads too?) carry around heavy guilt that makes the hardest job in the world even harder. I believe that we think we are the only ones dealing with these feelings and ask ourselves why we can’t have it “together” like the super mom who lives down the street (who, by the way, is probably thinking the same thing about you.)

I believe there are far too many of us asking ourselves, “What’s wrong with me?”

The answer – Nothing, except being human.

I believe our children deserve the very best we can give them. I don’t think that looks like perfection. I think it looks like unconditional love. Kids don’t care so much about “stuff” when they feel protected and cared for. Don’t believe me? Watch a kid’s face light up when they get the one present they wanted most.  Then watch his heartbreak when you won’t play with him. The toy means nothing without the love.

We spend so much time trying to be a perfect mom to the world and then feel like a failure when we can’t pull it off. Wouldn’t that time and energy be better spent on something you can do – like being the perfect mom to your kid?

The random, sometimes absent ";"

I don’t know what I would do without my laptop.  It is my lifeline to running my home, business, and education. I use it for everything. My husband is surprised that I cannot control it with my mind yet.

Well, I can’t. In fact, I am using the keyboard right now and it is harder than it used to be.

The multitasker that I am refuses to have an unproductive lunch.  I am eating with a client, affiliate, new contact, friend, or somebody.  If my lunch hour is free, I am eating at my desk.

Hence, the salmon in the keyboard.

This ever so slight sliver of fish fell from the fork into the slit between the “p” and the “;” No problem – I was a tech in the Navy.  This is easy stuff.  However, I had underestimated the difference between the rugged construction of aircraft and my laptop.

Pop off the “;” pop off the “p” remove the fish, reassemble.  No problem. Until the little plastic bracket thingy (yes, that’s the technical term) on the “;” snaps in two. Dangit.

After a bit of manipulation, the “;” is now back in it’s place – sort of. Sometimes it jiggles loose and is cattywhompus on my keyboard and I have to readjust it. My spell checker and backspace key are working overtime as little “;” show up randomly when I am typing. Until I actually need it, that is. Then the darn little thing has to be coaxed into working.

There are many laptops, but this one is mine.

How about that Dennis Miller!

Look out!  Chris Cree has taught me how to use the YouTube function in my blog.  This could become addictive.

Dennis Miller is a smart guy. I love to listen to him take apart the rhetoric and call it like it is.  “I am on this country’s side.”

You can think what you want, say what you want, believe what you want – as long as you are ready to back it up and own it.  I do. It is no secret I am a conservative.  Get a cup of coffee and I will gladly talk political philosophy – it is one of my favorite topics.  But action and realty demand that we be “behind our guy.”  Agree or disagree with the course of action – nobody’s right all the time – but we still have the best thing going.

Goals, values, and where do I go from here (even if it scares me to death!)

Not to inflate his ego, but Chris Cree is a smart guy (he married Lisa after all). A few days ago I listened to him on Wayne Hurlbert’s blogging radio show and he said some right smart things. Took me a few days to digest it. But, like all good food, it fed me well.

The beginning of this particular journey, oddly enough, started with Lisa asking me about my goals. Blech! That is difficult for me because of my intense hatred of failure and mediocrity. Where does one start?

I ran into a site via eWomen Network and I joined immediately. Smart Women’s Coaching is headed up by Katana Abbott and Jill Jordan. Again more talk about goals and getting what you want out of life

Well, as chance would have it, Lisa’s husband raised a follow up point – your goals have to coincide with your values. So, I asked myself, “April, what are your values?”  That turned out to be a way easier mountain to climb.

I can list a million things I value. After simmering on them for awhile, I can say that most, if not all fit in one of these:

I value family, education, and productive citizenship.

That was easier than “What are your goals?” But, an interesting thing happened. It has now become easier to define my goals.

  • I will be more involved in the school system this year
  • I will complete my GRI and ABR in the next 18 months
  • I will complete my degree within the next 3 years
  • I will continue to be aware and active of government happenings
  • I will start my book this year and have a plan for completion and development within the next 5 years

I think this is good start. And I was mindful to have all the componets that I think make up “a good goal.”

  • There is a concrete action
  • There is a timeline
  • They are written down and shared to provide accountability to myself and others
  • They are inline with my values

I can’t wait to see where we go from here!

Quick update…while looking for a new and exciting link to Lisa Cree, I found another goal…to learn from Christine Kane’s “18 Stupid Mistakes.”

The Newsletter

I don’t normally post the link to Turn Around Tuesday to the blog since the subscribe link is on my page…but this one is special – at least to me.  We’ll put it in the category of accountability.
