Bloggy Contest Results

Big congrats to Lani Anglin.  Hubby picked her name out of the hat Tupperware bowl first thing this morning.  I can’t wait to send her Rosa’s book.

And, since you are dying to know…here are the answers to the bloggy challenge:

  • Kekuewa (Kay cu eva) – “Sassy”
  • Kauailani (kwhy ee lonnie) – “Flower from heaven”
  • Kahaunani (ka how non e) – “Morning dew in heaven”
  • Pakalana (pak uh lonna) – Pakalana is a beautiful, sweet smelling flower

Also had a lot of folks wonder what the story was behind all those Hawaiian names.  Well, my dad is Hawaiian.  My great grandma named me, and my folks carried on the tradition.  When I had children of my own, it was my desire to do so as well.

  • My oldest was given mine
  • The next two are named after two of my aunties
  • Our baby got the middle name “Pakalana” after Mark asked if she could have his initials.  Pakalana is the name of two of the greatest women I know.

And there’s the story.  Can’t wait to figure out when the next bloggy contest will be
:)

The Book is Here and the Contest is Still Open

If you haven’t left a comment, made a guess, or considered yourself meme tagged, you still have time!  The mail lady just left me a box…this beautiful, hardcover, autographed copy of Managing with Aloha , by Rosa Say, is waiting for you to win!

The Benefit of Phenom Friends – The Challenge Trackback

I have some great friends.  I consider them to be my safety rope in the Chaos.  They keep me from going it alone.  I have been fortunate to make some really good ones – both here on the blogiverse, and in my local area.

Good friends challenge you.  They encourage you to be a better person. More than that, they expend of themselves to see that you succeed.

Lani and I email each other on a regular basis. There are no topics off limit. As such, they remain fairly private – we are both very responsible about what we will and won’t put on the net for anonymous viewing. However, we thought it would be neat to motivate each other to make positive difference – and those types of movements are incredibly blog worthy.

Last week, over on Making Life Work for You, I talked about personal responsibility.  It was the first attempt at an idea Lani and I have been brainstorming over. When she mentioned it, I immediately thought of the conversation Liz and Dawud are having. It’s cool – you should check it out.

So, this is home base. Whenever Lani or I become inspired to post about something we learned (or relearned), we’ll post it and link back here. We invite you to join us.

Recommendations to the Reading Chair

I have said it so many times before…I know the coolest people. And you guys read the coolest stuff. I am really tired of finding great books to read and then forgetting who, what, and where.

So, if you all would be so kind as to let me know what you think here.

If you have a review on your site, please link back here.

If you are an affiliate of an organization, make sure to include your affiliate link (Amazon, for example). Once I read the book and review it myself, I will keep your affiliate link intact. This is my way of showing you that I appreciate your participation.

Bloggy Contest Update

The contest is moving along nicely – feel free to tell your friends…or not. You may not want the competition.

I talked to Rosa. She is putting the prize winning book in the mail today – signed…so, the winner gets an autographed copy of Managing with Aloha! How cool is that!

On to other news – thanks to everybody for all your encouragement after “The Post” yesterday – I really appreciate it

I quit smoking

Just now…and that’s all I have to say about that.

“8 Random Things about Me” Bloggy Contest

So, I have been meme tagged by Chris Cree. And because I trust him to be a great filter, I am playing (not to mention the fact that I think memes are great fun).

He tagged me over at Making Life Work for You, but I am sure he will understand if I answer here at Beautiful Chaos.

  1. My faith is a journey.
  2. I still battle with the mean things kids say.
  3. I have horrid fashion sense. My husband is my saving grace in this category. He is very artistic with an eye for color (and tacky). He always makes sure I don’t make a fool of myself. His years of guidance are paying off – I can almost dress myself now!
  4. My favorite food is birthday cake -the yellow kind with white icing…preferably from Kroger. However, red and blue icing are deal breakers – yuck!
  5. I used to love going to the gym. I put on 80lbs. during my second pregnancy. Savannah only weighed 8lbs 15ozs - guess where the other 71lbs 1oz were…So, I got real serious about it. I really wish I could get back to that place mentality. It would sure benefit me physically.
  6. My kids and I all have Hawaiian middle names – Kekuewa (both mine and the oldest), Kauailani, Kahaunani, and Pakalana. Cool, huh?
  7. I hate the way I look in photographs and sound in audio recording. How egocentric is that?! But true none the less.
  8. Coloring my hair is one of my favorite things to do…well, having Kathlene color it for me. I just wish red didn’t fade so fast.

Notes:

  • Explanations of #1& #2 are intentionally left out – those require you buying me a cup of coffee :)
  • There is a bloggy contest associated with this meme – ready?
  1.  Give your guess in the comment section for the English meanings of #6 according to my great grandma (sorry, that’s the rule – she trumps all English-Hawaiian dictionaries). You get an entry for each right answer.
  2. Give your guess in the comment section for the pronunciation of #6. Again, one entry for each right answer.
  3. Just leave a comment.
  4. Participate in the meme and link back here. I am not tagging anybody in particular – hate to wear out my memey welcome :) If for some reason your link back doesn’t show up in the comment section, let me know and I’ll make sure you get your entry.

That’s it – you can obviously enter more than once to increase your chances. I’ll pull early next Tuesday, email the winner, and post the result in next weeks Turn Around Tuesday newsletter. You can subscribe on my website.

The winner will receive Managing with Aloha by Rosa Say. If you haven’t checked out her wealth of information, you should do that now.

:)

Getting comfortable with things that work – and changing things that don’t

I was on a roll this weekend.

  • I had finished reading The Secret some time ago. While I don’t buy into all of it, there was some encouraging stuff in there. Being intentional about how my brain works, where my thoughts go, and what my energy is focused on has been very helpful.
  • My inbox is still at under 10 messages. Talk about GTD. The lesson here is the fewer times you can touch something (email message) the more productive you can be. Get the email, process the email, file it or delete it. Don’t let it hang around.
  • After reading a few of Lyman’s post on Simpleology, I decided to check it out. I dig it. Deliberate, paced, and fun. The Daily Praxis has been most helpful. And Mark’s delivery is very funny – I like funny.

These things are working. They may not work for everybody, but they (with my tweaks) are working for me.

Tweaks…that’s where my train got derailed.

I have decided I am going to start The Reading Chair here at Beautiful Chaos. Why?

  • I like to read smart stuff. There are all kinds of people reading smart stuff. I make a little note to read whatever the recommendation is, lose the paper, spend a ton of time trying to find the recommendation.
  • I like to tell you about the stuff I read but I want the posts all in one place. Remember, I am trying to streamline certain aspects of my life.

Well, in an effort to do this, I got lost in the tweaks.

  • Wow, I must have this new plug in.
  • Look at this neat format idea.
  • My blog just would not survive without this.

Hours later, I am no closer to standing up The Reading Chair than I was 15 minutes into the endeavor. Stupid.

So, here is my daily affirmation.

  • I like the way Beautiful Chaos looks.
  • Beautiful Chaos serves its function as a blog.
  • Beautiful Chaos is user friendly and aesthetically pleasing just the way it is.
  • I will save mindless tweaking for my free time.

Time wasters. We all have them. This is one of mine and it is sickening. It must be eradicated. Sounds overly dramatic, I know – unless you see all the “to dos” yesterday that suffered from my lack of management.

Did something else this morning. I changed the way my email runs. I can’t turn Outlook off – it has my schedule on it and I have set up some alarms to keep me on track. But there is no doubt that real time email is this shiny thing that glitters and I find it impossible to resist – time waster. Solution – I turned off the “automatic send/receive.” Yes, I am experiencing withdraws. Yes, I am twitching a bit. No, I will not turn it back on. I hope.

I have to Weigh in on the Michael Vick Indictment

Ok – I don’t typically get into real controversial stuff, but this is one opinion I just have to voice.

Disclaimer 1- I think dog fighting is horrific and completely support the offense being labeled as a felony with prison time as a just punishment.

Disclaimer 2 – I could care less if if Michael Vick continues to receive endorsements – he never sends me any money so his income does not affect me.  I would prefer that Atlanta cut him simply because I am an Atlanta fan and not real impressed with his ability to lead the team or produce as a quarterback.

Down to my opinion. Vick has been indicted, not convicted. I don’t know why people have already called for the team and his sponsors to cut him. The Duke Lacrosse team is coming back to my memory.

Do I think he is guilty? Who cares. I am not on a jury – although I would be willing to volunteer if anybody can set that up for me.

There are people who say he is guilty. So what? I have been the unfortunate subject in a few untruths in my life. I’d be willing to bet you have too.

Then there’s the camp that says Michael Vick should be punished even if he isn’t convicted because everybody knows that rich people always get off. Just look at OJ. This aggravates me to no end.  Let’s follow this logic. I work hard, get born into, dumb luck – whatever – my way into being successful and making a boatload of money. Now, anybody can claim anything against me, true or not, and based on the claim, I am penalized. Does this make sense – really?  Who in their right mind would agree with this if it were themselves being treated this way?

The person (Michael Vick) is not the issue here. Neither is the crime. The point is the right we all have to our day in court and to defend ourselves. Micheal Vick is not an exception. Dog fighting isn’t either.

If you chose to disagree – that’s great, as that is your right. I just hope, for your sake, you don’t end up on the other side of the judgement fence.

I am batting .800 for the day

And that is saying something in the world of Beautiful Chaos!

First – the things I did not do

  1. Make a breakfast meeting – which I hate that I missed
  2. Get my college enrollment letter in the mail – which I can do tomorrow

But – I did

  1. Have lunch with a friend
  2. Get my Constant Contact set up for Turn Around Tuesday
  3. Got the Bryan County GOP website up (read “started) – come on, nobody’s surprised I am a conservative.
  4. Got as far as I could get with the Top 2 Bottom Organizing webpage
  5. My crowning achievement…MY FAVICON WORKS! After some direction from Jay, a lot of procrastination, and a link from Char…woo hoo!!

Sure – that’s only .714.  But if you take into consideration that I fixed my hair, brushed my teeth, and kept up with all the kids – that’s an even .800.

I am going to take a nap ;)
