David vs. Goliath

I am currently reading Max Lucado’s Facing Your Giants. Let me go ahead and be on record saying it is a very uncomfortable read. I am constantly finding myself having to put the book down and make excuses to do something else. I can’t read it right now because I forgot what page I was on and it would simply take more time than I have to find my spot – you’re buying that, right?

This particular Lucado installment takes the story of David and Goliath and relates it to those things that makes you want to stay in the bed with your covers over your head. You know what they are. That thing that freezes you up, tightens your chest, stings your eyes. Those things that you have a hard time telling anybody about but are certain everybody – even strangers – know about you. These are obviously your “Goliaths.”

We are billed as David. Max walks us through the story of David and how we are probably more like him than we think. I am gathering this is a good thing. David is a man of many faults, but he is chosen. He messes up over and over again, but he is called “a man after God’s own heart.”

Sounds simple enough to maneuver through…yeah, if you have no giants staring you in the face. Unfortunately, I have them. I’ve named them Fred, Stanley…seriously, introspection into those things I perceive as weakness is not high on my feel good list.  In fact, the only reason I am writing this now is for personal accountability in moving through the process.

I am supposed to talk about the Goliaths I face. I am not ready to put that out here yet – I may never be…

I am supposed to talk about how majoring in God overcomes Goliath…still a bit personal at the moment…

So what can I talk about here? I can answer Max’s question

Is your list of blessings four times as long as your list of complaints? Is your mental file of hope four times as thick as your mental file of dread? Are you four times as likely to describe the strength of God as you are the demands of your day?

Sure I am – not. Oh yeah – publicly, I am putting forth the sunny face. I think it is important to be positive and uplifting. It is the way I want to feel. It is the person I want to be. My inner dialogue is something else entirely. Something tells me a good bit of us are that way.

So here and now, I am telling you that I am a blessed, hopeful, strengthened woman. I am thinking I need to set that up as an every five minute auto text to my phone…

Wireless Amber Alerts – Do it Now!

Amber ALertsYour inbox gets the “please find this child” email for the umpteenth billion time. It’s a scam. You know it is. But, facts are that children go missing. And there has to be a better way than sorting though spam.

I thought it was a wonderful idea when they installed the Amber Alert signs on the interstates. Unfortunatley, I am not always on the interstate, or in my car, or watching TV. But I almost ALWAYS have my cell phone.

Wireless Amber Alerts allows you to subscribe to a service that sends Amber Alerts directly to your cell phone in the form of a text message. Sign up is quick and easy. It’s dern near a moral obligation – yes, I feel that strongly about it.

One zip code from a city will cover the entire city regardless of the number of zip codes located in it. You can chose up to five. Cell Carriers that have come on board will not charge you text messaging fees for the service. Got any other questions – they have a page for that here.

Now get to clicking – we are all subscribed to less important things.

We’re up…I think

The holidays were amazing!
img_2496-small.JPG

  • My sister had my niece 7 weeks early. All are fine, but Phylisa is still in the hospital. She should come home soon. Ain’t she pretty!
  • Both of my babies decided to get matching pairs of double ear infections.
  • Babies also decided to get mommy and daddy sick too.
  • My website crashed – hard

Notice that none of these situations were ones I could control. We all know how much I love that (insert sarcasm here).

At any rate, I think we are all back up and running. I had to reload some of the comments that I still had on file. However, some of them between December 21st and now are gone forever. It could be worse – yesterday, they were ALL gone. However, there was a great conversation going on about the education video posted. That’s gone. That’s disappointing.

I do know that I am not the only one. Kris Berg had the same issue. I feel your pain honey!

I also know that once again, the phenom Chris Cree showed up and showed out. I didn’t even have to ask for help – he offered. Then he held class and educated all of us. There is great information here…go check it out!

So, onward and upward…and if we could continue brainstorming about that education video, that would be great!

*Update – guess what I found in my email…some of the comments for the video post!!  I am re inputing them  now!!

Not yet ready to return to our regularly scheduled programming

So, the idea was that I would lay low for the holidays. It was the holidays, after all. Add to that some sick kids and a cold myself, seemed like the perfect time for some time off. Then, when the New Year rang in, so would I. Back to work and back to the web.

Then my website went crazy. Serve fell down and skinned it’s knee, email took a vacation, and the “Cannot connect to this site” was my front page. BlueHost worked on it and it should’ve been good to go. Except, all the comments on My Beautiful Chaos are gone. All of them. Now, BlueHost can see them – they are in the database. That’s promising. But…

  • I haven’t changed anything on the backend of the blog
  • I use the same theme here as I do on Making Life Work for You and there aren’t these problems over there
  • I tried to use a default theme and I deactivated all the plugins…same problems.
  • I am running an older version of WordPress and I am scared to death to update it. I don’t think my theme supports the new version and I really don’t want to change my theme. Maybe I will have to bite the bullet

At any rate…please forgive the mess while I abuse my friendship with Chris Cree and he helps me figure this out. If you have any suggestions, the new comments still work, please feel free to leave them.

BTW – Happy New Year and GO DAWGS!

Going into the Coffee Shop for Hillary Clinton

Coffee CupWhen I first started blogging, I understood the difficulties in “in the box” communication. With online talks and discussions you have a few characteristics that make some conversation difficult different.

There is no body language, no tone of voice, no real time response. A person can read one post and not get the whole story or know me as a person and get the wrong idea. The ability to be anonymous emboldens some folks to say things they wouldn’t normally say.

So, in the beginning, I decided that there were two kinds of topics – blog topics and coffee shop topics. Some topics were fairly safe to talk about on the web while still being interesting. Others could be too easily misconstrued and would therefore be held for times when I could get together with a real person, face to face.

However, I have since realized that there is a wealth of opinionated and knowledgeable ideas out there with folks I know and trust. So, it is time to go into the coffee shop.

I will be honest, I am treading these waters very carefully. This is meant for great discussion. I may have a little or a lot to say. We will have to see.

The fact that I am a conservative should not be a surprise to anyone – but if you didn’t know, I am outing myself now. I haven’t picked my nominee yet because I like a few of them for different reasons. Immigration policy, Iraqi plans, tax reform, sanctity of life…those kinds of reasons.

So, now on to my question…

I am honestly looking for a Hillary fan to discuss why she is a good choice. I haven’t heard one person tell me anything other than it’s time for a change, she’s a woman, or she’s been there before.

  • Change for the sake of change is not a good idea. It is desperate and not the way to run a country.
  • Yea Girl Power – but electing a woman just because she is a woman is bad for the same reason as change. Get a woman in there that blows it and it will be because she is a woman. May not be true, but that’s how it will play out.
  • I agree with Obama on one point – talking with your husband about his job does not necessarily make you qualified to do his job

I am looking for issues, track record – something I can wrap my mind around. As of right now, the her current success in her bid for the nomination seems ridiculously shallow.

The Chaos gets kicked in the Factum

Tim Johnson called Beautiful Chaos his “favorite find of 2007.” Yes that Tim Johnson – yes this Beautiful Chaos.

It must be Lani.

As appreciative as I am, I am more humbled and convicted. I made a promise. I think I am dangerously close to breaking it. Tim, among others, have been incredibly supportive. I have been complacent.

I could sit here and tell you how busy I have been – but we are all busy.  I could tell you how wrapped up I have been in my Chaos – but we are all wrapped up.  I could ask your forgiviness – but knowing most of you like I do, you already have.  Thanks.

Or, I could live up to the lofty compliment bestowed upon us (Tim, the check is in the mail ;) ).

Hmmm…stretch yourself to do things you didn’t think you could do and have a great time doing it…seems like I have heard that some place before.

My September 11th Heroes

The size of this day is almost too much.  One almost cannot even begin to comprehend it when taken in its entirety.  I won’t even attempt it.  I honor of all those affected by that day, I want to thank those that impacted my life directly.

I have told the story about where I was.  This is what happened next.

The base was put on lockdown.  We were instructed that those of us who lived in military housing with our families would need to put a plan together immediately to evacuate them.  The fear was that our chance of being a target was great.  We were right outside of Chicago and the home of the largest Naval training facility.

Madison was 4 and Savannah was 2 months old.   Mark and I decided that should the call go out to evacuate, the three of them would go home to Georgia.  I would try to get home as soon as I could to help him pack.

I had just been promoted and they had not updated my ID card.  This meant my ID and my uniform did not match.  Usually not a big deal – but this was no where near “usually.”  My superior officers decided it was best if I went home and did not attempt to come back on to the main base until a runner could bring me the necessary paperwork.

By the time I got to base housing, there were big concrete barriers blocking all the entrances except one.  The main entrance was also equipped with these same barriers forming a maze forcing those who entered to do so slowly.  The guard shack was manned with armed security forces.  This would be the norm for a long time to come.

The order never came to evacuate our families.  I was thankful.  Although I was the military member, I always feel safer when Mark is around.  After a while, we attempted to regain some sense of a normal routine.

The first time Madison saw the guards at the entrance, she was bewildered.  The second time she had questions.  Why were they there?  Where had they been before?  Why do they have guns?  Is it because of the planes?

As I am sure many of you know, explaining the events of September 11th to a 4 year old is not easy.  Tip toeing on truth and appropriateness while maintaining a delicate balance of awareness and safety is no small feat.

Yes, they are there because of the planes.  They have guns to make sure that bad folks can’t hurt you.  They are here to help Mommy and Daddy keep you safe.

“Sure does look like they are cold out there,” Madison commented.  She was right – they sure did look cold.  We brought them coffee that they wouldn’t take.  Of course they wouldn’t – I knew better.  It’s a security precaution.  But, Madison was satisfied that they were okay out there, and they knew we appreciated them.

We really appreciated them.

These guys protected my home with force and at the risk of life.  Seems dramatic now, but the fear was very real then.  They did more than stand watch at the gate of housing, they gaurded the gate of my baby’s fear.  Mommy and Daddy would never let anything happen to her or her new baby sister, and these guys were going to make sure of it.

Thank you to all the men and women who stood watch outside of Great Lakes housing.  You kept my family safe.  Thank you to all those who continue to stand watch around the world.  You continue to provide that safety.  You are supported and appreciated.

This space reserved for Pavarotti

Like Athol, I am not a opera buff.  I would like to be as it amazes me, but I think it may be the language barrier – I don’t know.  At any rate, I was still moved when I found out that the great Pavarotti had passed.

But don’t stop here.  Jump on over to Athol’s house and see the amazing duet with James Brown!

High Five

Dewayne Melancon over at Genuine Curosity has tagged me with a “5 sites you use at work” after he had been tagged by Ariane.

Like Dewayne, I am not sure if these are “top” – meaning, it is very possible that you could say, “Well what about…” and I would rethink.

But, these are five that I visit on a daily basis…some may not seem industry related, but they are April related.  I am a firm believer that when I am better, smarter, faster – my clients benefit. So here we go…

1) 21Online – Century 21 has a resource for it’s agents that I love.  Lots of training, insight, tools, and materials. (This is an agent only site. Consumers will find Century21.com far more helpful)

2) Managing with Aloha Coaching – My virtual coach.  Rosa helps me get my mind right and untangle the mess.

3) Think Positive –  Kirsten is my virtual encourager.  She enables me to take deep breaths, pull my shoulders back, and step into the flow of intention.

4) MapQuest – Almost always gets me to where I need to go.

5) Constant Contact - Best customer contact tool I have found.  They make Turn Around Tuesday easy.

Now I am getting selfish.  The five folks tagged are those who I admire and can’t wait to see their answers so I can use them!
